About

Ten Ring biathlon academy was founded by Missoula natives Wes Hale and Katie Scott. Inspired by Wes’s passion for shooting and coaching and Katie’s love of the sport, they decided it was time to bring biathlon to western Montana.

WES HALE
Co-Founder, Head Shooting Coach

Wes is the assistant rifle and pistol coach of the Hellgate Canyon Junior Shooters. He began training in precision rifle 20 years ago at the Hellgate Civilian Shooters Association and was coached by Richard Houldson, Gary Swartz, and Jason Herndon. He competed in and won numerous state championships as a junior and has also qualified for and won several competitions in rifle at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2013 he received a bachelor's in Microbiology from the University of Montana and briefly left shooting sports to co-found the biomedical research and development company Wintermute Biomedical. Upon his return to shooting sports in 2018, he began coaching. He officially started coaching the Hellgate Canyon Junior Shooters in 2020 and has since expanded to coaching adults who are interested in improving their rifle skills for biathlon.

Katie Scott
Co-Founder, Assistant Coach

Katie was born in Missoula, Montana and grew up ranching, kayaking and skiing. She left Montana at age 17 and took off pursuing her ambitions as a film maker and a professional kayaker to many places around the world. Her knack for unearthing stories landed her producer positions for major TV networks such as CBS, A&E, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC Worldwide. Rivers in India and Africa, jungles of South America, small caves in the Himalayas have been the backdrops for connections shared through her camera lens and stories she has written.

In 2021 Katie moved back to Montana to be closer to her family and root in the Missoula community. She competed Biathlon for the Montana Army National Guard and fell in love with the sport. Katie has found great value in Biathlon and her intention is to harness the growing need for access to activities conducive for a healthy mind and body and make Biathlon accessible to anyone interested. Katie currently works as a creative manager at onXmaps and owns a local advertising agency Katie Scott Productions

MATT SHRYOCK
DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, FITNESS COACH

Matt was born and raised in the small mountain town of Whitefish, MT. An environment that first cultivated his hunger for adventure, the outdoors, and healthy living. Over the years, he has competed at the elite level in both triathlon and long-distance mountain running. While living in Alaska he discovered biathlon and finds the blend of precision shooting and endurance athletics a perfect fit for his skill set. He hopes to foster an inclusive and non-judgmental space open to anyone interested in learning more about the sport of biathlon. Other interests include weight training, yoga, hunting, culinary endeavors, dog walks, good coffee, and mountain biking. By trade, he works as a Nurse Practitioner in cardiology managing arrhythmias, pacemaker and defibrillators.
